I’ve noticed that some managed databases seem to have “extra nodes” - what are these and what would they be used for?
Is it basically a duplicated database in another region (for things like load balacing, etc)?

Hello,
Are you referring to the Stand by nodes? If so you would want to add a standby node to enable automatic failover. That way if your main server crashes, you will have a stand-by node available for failover and there will be minimal to no downtime.
Hope that this helps! Regards, Bobby
