Primary domain timcomp.com wont resolve however the www.timcomp.com will

The weird thing is there is only one A name record for timcomp.com which points to my droplets ip address and then the www.timcomp.com is a cname that points back to timcomp.com. I’ve checked my apache conf for the site listing ServerName timcomp.com and ServerAlias www.timcomp.com however still it only resolves a page if it’s typed as www.timcomp.com.

Hi @shunobies,

Currently both timcomp.com and www.timcomp.com does seem to work. It seems like your domain was still propagation.

DNS propagation however unlikely can run up to 24 hours so it wasn’t actually somekind of a problem. We’ve get accustomed to 2-3 hours of propagation and even less however the reality as I mentioned is it can take up to 24 hours.

Nevertheless,I’m glad to see your website working!

  • If you do not enter https://timcomp.com or http://timcomp.com the browser aka chrome will rewrite the url as www.*.*

So I still do not have a response for just my domain name if typed in without the www prefix.

    • Hi @shunobies,

I’m not sure I understood you completely however everything works properly from my end.

      Here is a quick demonstration

      ping timcomp.com
      PING timcomp.com (134.209.36.231) 56(84) bytes of data.
      64 bytes from 134.209.36.231 (134.209.36.231): icmp_seq=1 ttl=55 time=213 ms
      ^C
      --- timcomp.com ping statistics ---
1 packets transmitted, 1 received, 0% packet loss, time 0ms

      ping www.timcomp.com
      PING timcomp.com (134.209.36.231) 56(84) bytes of data.
      64 bytes from 134.209.36.231 (134.209.36.231): icmpseq=1 ttl=55 time=198 ms
      64 bytes from 134.209.36.231 (134.209.36.231): icmp
      seq=2 ttl=55 time=132 ms
      ^C
      — timcomp.com ping statistics —
2 packets transmitted, 2 received, 0% packet loss, time 1001ms

The above pings show both www and non www work for me.

      Now for the **Redirects**

Using CURL I'll check if there is a 301 REDIRECTION code on your websites

      curl -IL www.timcomp.com
      HTTP/1.1 200 OK
      Date: Sat, 21 Dec 2019 08:08:20 GMT

      curl -IL timcomp.com
      HTTP/1.1 200 OK
      Date: Sat, 21 Dec 2019 08:08:54 GMT

Both www and non www give back a Code 200 which is that the website has been loaded successfully without a redirect. If you however still get redirected, it's most probably due to your browser's cache. I'll recommend deleting it.

If I've however not fully understood you, please provide me with a bit more information to help you resolve the issue.
