Repairing Ubuntu filesystem with e2fsck - How to unmout it first?

Posted on February 14, 2018

After running fsck -nf /dev/vda1 I see that there are errors to be fixed, but I can’t run e2fsck -vf /dev/vda while the disk is mounted.
I also can’t boot into the recovery kernel via the control panel because it says The kernel for this Droplet is managed internally and cannot be changed from the control panel.

How to proceed?
