Is it possible to setup a highly available load balancer on DO, or does the way IP addresses are allocated prevent that? I know that a load balancer could be setup on a single node, but that doesn’t make the overall system any more reliable than the single load balancing node.

Currently we do not support floating IPs which would failover between nodes so it isn’t possible, however we are looking into providing that functionality in the future.
You could setup 2 droplets and use something like Route 53 (Amazon) to round-robin the requests in the event one of the IP’s isn’t reachable. That should get around not having a floating IP and allow you to setup a layer of redundancy. Route 53 is relatively cheap, we use it on quite a few domains and it averages an extra $2 to $5 a month. On higher traffic domains, due to the number of requests, you may pay a little more, but still relatively cheap and have the functionality since most registrars don’t offer it.
