Files ending with the extensiongz are “gzip” archives. The files are compressed in order to save space. To view them, you can use the zless tool. E.g.:
- zless error.log.10.gz
The program logrotate automatically compresses old log files. The one without the .gz file extension will be your most recent, uncompressed log file. It will most likely be the one that contains the information that you are looking for. To see just the most recent entries in the log, run:
- tail error.log
