I was looking to see if there was updated documentation for migrating from WPE to DO. There is a post, but it is over 2 years old (https://www.digitalocean.com/community/questions/moving-wordpress-site-from-wp-engine-to-digitalocean).
Would “Deploy pre-built applications” be the most recent and up to date way to proceed?

The most up to date guides that you’d need to follow to install WordPress on Ubuntu 16.04 would be (in order):
Initial Server Setup with Ubuntu 16.04
How To Install Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP (LAMP) stack on Ubuntu 16.04
How To Install WordPress with LAMP on Ubuntu 16.04
When you get to the third guide, in place of installing WordPress, you’d simply drop in your files that you’ve pulled from WPEngine. You would then restore the database to the database you created on your droplet (i.e restore the WPEngine MySQL dump to the new droplet database).
The guide is still valid in terms of guiding you through the process, though the guides I’ve provided above are the most up to date for the latest LTS (Long-Term Support) release of Ubuntu.
That said, if you run in to issues, have questions, etc – feel free to post here and let me know where you’re stuck.
