Hello,
I’m new to all this. I have just connected to FTP via FileZilla but I upload a few test pages but can’t seem to load them. So basically, my question is, where do we upload files to. In FileZilla I am in the root folder. Is this correct.

If your goal is to create a website, the first thing you need to do is install a webserver. Where you need to upload your files will depend on your choice of webserver. Apache is one of the most popular choices. On Ubuntu 14.04 with Apache, you would upload your files to /var/www/html
