Question

Can I delete the 'snap' folder?

I am trying to save space on my Ubuntu 20.04 droplet, and I have noticed a folder called “snap” which takes a lot of disk space. I do not remember that I ever used a program called “snap”. Can I safely delete this folder?

Hi there,

I believe that the directory should not be deleted manually. What you could try is to purge old versions of the installed snaps.

Here is a quick script that you could run to do that:

#!/bin/bash

# Removes old revisions of snaps
# CLOSE ALL SNAPS BEFORE RUNNING THIS

set -eu
snap list --all | awk '/disabled/{print $1, $3}' |
    while read snapname revision; do
        snap remove "$snapname" --revision="$revision"
    done

Hope that this helps!

Best,

Bobby
