Question

How to download/export a file from AppPlatform to your local environment

DigitalOcean App Platform

I have an app platform environment with a backup file that is taken every once in a while. I want to move that backup file either to my local environment or to github. The problem is, I don’t know how! I’ve tried pushing to github, but it hangs whenever I push. I’ve tried an s3 bucket, but it seems like I’d need sudo access to install the AWS cli tools.
Does anyone have some suggestions? Thanks ahead of time!

Hello,

Indeed if you’re trying to use buildpacks with App Platform, apt commands are not supported, though we plan to offer a method to do this in the future.

A workaround is to build and deploy using a Dockerfile. That way in the Dockerfile you can specify all of the packages that you want to be installed, like the AWS cli tool for example.

Alternatively as you said you should be able to use git it should already be present on the App Platform. What you could do is to create a GitHub token and use it for authentication.

Let me know how it goes.
Best,
Bobby

  • To add to this, depending on what language your app is written in, you might be able to take advantage of its package manager to install CLI tools or libraries that you can use to upload your backups to S3. That way you could avoid having to use a Dockerfile.
