Question

View Bandwidth Usage For App Platform

I understand that there is currently no way to view bandwidth usage for apps and spaces, but is there any plan / eta for this feature? I have a relatively small app, but I would like to know exactly how much bandwidth I am using so I can plan for the future and see if I will need to be scaling up.

Hi there,

Quick update here.

As per the release notes on August 1, 2024, you can now view Spaces bandwidth usage as the invoices now include a breakdown of bandwidth usage and cost per Spaces bucket.

If you have 100 or more Spaces buckets, you can only view this breakdown in the CSV version of the invoice. To view or download invoices, see the DigitalOcean Invoices billing page.

Hi there,

You can actually see the ingress bandwidth usage and a lot of other useful metrics under your App insights tab:

On another note, it’s important to note that bandwidth alone might not be the most effective metric for determining when to scale your application. Instead, a more comprehensive approach would be to monitor your resource utilization, which is readily available through the App Platform’s graphs.

  • Metrics like CPU usage and memory consumption are more direct indicators of your app’s performance and can guide you better in terms of scaling decisions.
  • By monitoring these resources, you can predict potential bottlenecks and scale your application before these issues impact your users.

You can follow the steps here on how to check your insights as well:

https://docs.digitalocean.com/products/app-platform/how-to/view-insights/

If you want the bandwidth usage for billing purposes, to check that currently, follow these steps:

  • Log in to your DigitalOcean Control Panel
  • Then click on ‘Billing’
  • You will be able to see your current usage and will be able to tell if you are going over your default limits

While keeping an eye on bandwidth usage via your billing is useful, focusing on direct performance metrics available through the App Platform’s graphs will provide a more accurate and actionable insight into when to scale your application.

Hope that this helps!

Best,

Bobby
