Hi mate, I have a question I hope you can help me.

I currently have a drop for which I pay $ 10 a month. As a daily backup option I set up my account with snapshooter.io which was supposed to be “free” but later I found out that it uses an OC api to make the copies and that entails an expense.

Monthly I get more than $ 14 in daily backups, more expensive than drop.

For the moment disable that daily snapshooter copy and choose to configure my db copy in simplebackups.io.

How do you recommend making a copy? I am more interested in backing up the database than files.

Is there a more reliable service?

Hey @jamachuca28,

Simon from SnapShooter here.

We are sorry if the process of connecting SnapShooter to DigitalOcean was confusing. We have tried our best with a warning screen that users have to approve before connecting, explaining the process and costs. We will review it again to see if we can make some more improvements.

We actually support snapshots with multiple providers (DigitalOcean, AWS, Hetzner) and then we have a backups feature for backing up files and database directly off servers.

We are finding our users use a mix of SnapShots and direct backups to give a combination of the speed of recovery (snapshots) and price with backups by only backing up what’s needed off a server.

I guess from your budget your ideally looking for a free service or solution.

For storage you could look at DigitalOcean object storage that starts at $5 and gives you plenty of storage for a single database backup.

Or you could look at a provider like Backblaze B2, which is one of the cheapest.

Using a DIY solution like this you forgo the pleasures of having someone else monitoring it and notify of failures etc as well as more advanced rotation policies.

Could you clarify your reliable service comment? We have just surpassed 100PB in total backups and have seen excellent reliability across the board for all of our customers.

If you want any more help getting set up I am always happy to help, even free users, just let me know, you can personally email me simon@snapshooter.io if you wish or book a call with myself https://snapshooter.io/demo

Regards
