So I set up .htaccess while I was developing the website, now I can’t seem to remove it. I’ve deleted the .htaccess file, removed the directory code from the conf file, and rebooted the server. And still a challenge screen presents to me.

Do you mean you have restricted your website with authorization while developing it?
If yes, is it possible you’ve added it directly into your apache’s conf? If so, you can try doing the following:
If you see any of the following:
You’ll need to remove them and reload apache2

It sounds like that you might have the rule added to another config file as well.
What I could suggest is using the
grep
command to search for theauth
keyword in your Apache conf directory, eg:That way you will find any other auth references that might be causing your problem.
