accessing individual pages on a droplet with no domain name?

 • Posted January 22, 2014

Is a domain name necessary in order to link to individual PHP files on a droplet? (I don’t need a human friendly URL, just a way to point to the file on the server) I am a cash-strapped college student, and I’d rather not shell out for a domain that I will only use for about 4 months.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, I just can’t find the answer on Google.

You can use the IP address of a server to access any exposed service. With a web server running, you would just need to put the IP in your browser’s address bar:

If you want a free domain name, there are quite a few services offering free use of their subdomains (FreeDNS, DynDNS and No-IP to name a few). Searching for dynamic DNS should also turn up similar services.
