Active backup on existed droplet without re-create?

Posted on November 27, 2014

I created a droplet a few months ago but don’t choose to active backup. Now I want to active backup feature on my droplet without any downtime. So, are there any ways to do that? thanks.

Follow-up question. If I have my droplet (without backup) connected to ServerPilot - will that still work after re-creation of Droplet with the same IP?

Currently you will need to rebuild your droplet from a snapshot in order to activate the backup service. You can do this by following the steps below:

1.) Power off your droplet and create a snapshot

2.) Create a test droplet from your snapshot to ensure it works as expected and then delete the test droplet once done.

3.)Destroy your current live droplet

4.) Create a new droplet in the same data center as the one you just deleted. Select your snapshot image instead of a default OS image and be sure to enable backups here.

Your new droplet will retain your filesystem which was carried over in the snapshot, will retain the IP address of your current droplet and will now have backups enabled.
