  • You're need first to connect to your "server machine" e.g. droplet. Read this.

If you want use human-oriented package & dependency manager on OS X there is no alternative but http://brew.sh/

DigitalOcean Droplets are managed using a terminal and SSH. SSH is an encrypted network protocol for remote server login and command execution. It is the standard method used for accessing and interacting with Linux servers. This tutorial shows how to connect to a DigitalOcean Droplet for the first time by using the OpenSSH client.

You're on your macbook, not your droplet.

what is droplet?

  • @navalkishoregr A Droplet is what DigitalOcean calls a VPS, much like how some refer to them as Cloud Servers, Cloud Instances etc.

As for the apt-get command, this is native to Ubuntu & Debian Operating Systems. OSX, Apples' OS, using the installer command, IIRC.
