Is it safe to do apt-get upgrade on this ? I’m using the application installation and the only thing I installed after fresh Wordpress on Ubuntu is phpmyadmin.

The general rule, regardless of what it is that you’re going to actually to, is to take a back up of your data and existing configurations before changing the configuration of your servers. That way (for instance using DO`s snapshots), you can roll back to exactly the state you were in before you begun.
