Unlike @hansen ’s experience, it never removes tag itself once all resources are removed from it. So it will appear in dropdowns and could go on nerves for some people.

You can’t delete tag via Control Panel, but you can use API, in two ways:

• Harder method: use API endpoint directly by calling it using cURL or similar utility
• Easier method: use doctl command doctl compute tag delete mytag.

That way, you should be able to delete tag and it will not appear in dropdowns

When you remove a tag, so it isn’t used anywhere, then it should automatically be removed.
You can use this URL to list all tags called mytag (example) and from there you can edit each connection, so they don’t contain that tag.
