When do they occur? Do they shut down the server?

Automatic Backups are done via the backend scheduler on various timing mechanisms which we are still adjusting so there isn't a set specific time when they are taken per virtual server.

They do not shutdown the server when they are taken.

Destroying a server that had backups enabled will also then destroy the associated backups that were taken from that virtual server.
Honestly, the automatic backups don't happen with near the frequency I'd expect. Sometimes I've seen the system go as long as 72 hrs before another automatic backup is done. I think this is a great failure of DigitalOcean, you should be able to do backups as frequently as every 6 hours.

Well I created servers 5 days ago, and turned on autobackup, have not seen anything yet :( also my bill has not changed for days, maybe I need to re-evaluate DO as hosting place.
