Hi, I’m quite new to setting up VPS with digital ocean. I want an all round solutions for setting up a web server with a web panel that I can create hosting accounts for different projects running on LAMP. The closest I could find was Vesta. I thought it was a good solution but then I realised it had an old version of PHP. When updating the PHP I was getting stuck with the server downloading PHP files. I tried everything to make it work but with no luck! I’ve also tried Ajenti.

The ability to run Laravel & wordpress is a must!

Does anybody know any good tutorials to really help me achieve everything?

While there are several free control panels out there the current state of that niche in software is that the commercial options are usually more stable, up to date and better supported. I would recommend looking into a VPS license for cPanel or Plesk or dig into our tutorials and start setting up your environment from the command line.

If you’re not already familiar with the open source control panels out there you will almost certainly spend more time evaluating and troubleshooting them than you would following the guides to set things up manually so if you’re looking to learn I’d go that way.

One of the most common steps to take when setting up a new server is to install a LAMP stack. LAMP stands for Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP. These individual components, when used together, allow us to host dynamic web content like websites and web apps on our server. We will demonstrate how to install these pieces and configure a basic setup for Ubuntu 14.04 in this guide.
