Well, I would like to buy a VPS. Is it possible to provide Shared Hosting Support to customers now? I mean, can I setup control panel to manage multiple domain and hosting and let customers to access their control area?

The answer is yes.

You can get a larger plan, get your self a suitable control panel like cPanel or DirectAdmin and if needed automatic billing scripts (paid option again) and start your business..

Only issue you need to remember is, although you have sold the hosting to a customer, here in DO, you would be accountable for all the account related activities..

  • “Only issue you need to remember is, although you have sold the hosting to a customer, here in DO, you would be accountable for all the account related activities..”

So it is possible to lose your droplet with, let’s say 10 hosted clients or do you get enough time from DO to warn or solve the issue? It wouldn’t be great to lose all client’s data if one of them messes up.

  • I don’t think, one who runs business should only rely on DO policy but rather should have a nightly backup option on off shore location for those just in case occasion..

Regarding DO, be is abuse or DCMA, you do get email notification and when replied in timely manner along with proper steps to troubleshoot the issue, you do get enough time to remove the faulty account and data..

But then again, when running business, always have an option ready for regular backup in offshore location but safety of your client, their and your data..

Yes, you can do this, however its probably not going to be the fastest or great service because everything will be running from the same server.

In a single server setup, that one server will have to handle all the tasks needed (Email, Database, Web, Etc.) Its best to have 2 servers at min IMO, one to run the services needed like Email and Database and one for the web / control panel.

Other option is to just get a reseller account from a place like ResellerChoice and save yourself a lot of admin time and effort.

DO servers/droplets are not designed to be long term shared hosting service, they are more usable for single services like caches, db, mail, etc. if you plan to setup a shared hosting service try other solutions and complement with DO, You can have a pretty good 8+ core VPN (half the price than DO similar) on and setup some cache solutions on DO like varnish to go easy on your main server resources.

Just go and compare prices/resources and you will see what I’m talking about. Large droplets are not that good when you compare resources per cost.

Shared hosting is better when beginners want to develop website. VPS is Virtual Private Servers. VPS is completely the customizable which can be upgraded any of time site grows. It provide fill root access which means total control, and allow to install the advanced software and provide completely customized environment.
