Cannot Access SFTP Server in Ubuntu 12.04

Posted July 7, 2013 16.9k views
I have recently installed the Ubuntu 12.04 LAMP stack but have not been able to connect to my SFTP server remotely. I created a new user (per the Ubuntu setup guide) and disabled remote login with root. When I try to access the SFTP server (via Filezilla on Mac) with my new user account, I get the following response: Response: fzSftp started Command: open "user@###.###.###.###" 22 Error: Connection refused Error: Could not connect to server When I try to login locally, sftp user@###.###.###.###, I get the following: ssh: connect to ###.###.###.### port 22: Connection refused Couldn't read packet: Connection reset by peer I have been scouring the message boards for days and have had no luck in finding a solution. Could anyone please help?

I have the same problem.

I cannot access my sftp through either fireftp or filezilla. (the error I get here is Unable to make a connection. Please try again.)

I cannot even access it through putty (Putty say: Network error, connection timed out)

This has been like this for some times now (Though i noticed this after installing GDATA Internet Security, but I have uninstalled it without success as well.

I am using a Internet Connection from my mobile phone hotspot with DHCP.

Please help me
Are you able to SSH in? Did you modify /etc/ssh/sshd_config (other than editing the PermitRootLogin directive)?
Thanks for getting back to me, Kamal.

I am able to SSH in with no problem.

I just realized my mistake after all of these hours of troubleshooting. For added security, I changed my port from the default (21) to a new value. I was still trying to access SFTP via port 21. As soon as I changed the port to the new value, Filezilla connected with no problem.

I am really sorry to waste your time for such a simple problem.
Matthew, I'm really glad to hear you are able to SSH in again. :]
@paediatech: What's the output of this command?

iptables -L -n -v
I am having a similar problem.

My output of the iptables command is in this screen shot:

I cannot access via SSH or SFTP on an app install of Wordpress Ubuntu 12.10
