July 7, 2014 4.8k views

I have recently migrate my wordpress multisite fron shared hosting to DO. I am a bit newbie in server management, so I do it following this great tutorial and the others linked in it:

All works well but themes upload. When I try to install a theme it show me this error:

"Unable to create directory uploads/2014/07. Is its parent directory writable by the server?"

Any help?

Make sure that you have given the www-data user permission to write to the folder. Run (replacing username with your user):

sudo chown -R  username:www-data /var/www/html
sudo chmod -R  g+w /var/www/html

Hi! Thanks for your answer, but continue not working.

I can install themes and plugins from wordpress repository, upload images... but if I upload a theme via wordpress uploader it show the error.

  • Doe the folder /var/www/html/wp-content/uploads already exist?

Yes, it is on <code>/var/www/html/wp-content/uploads</code>

Problem found!
I had wrong upload path in Network admin -> Sites -> Main site edit -> Settings -> upload path
( Setting->Media in normal installation )

  • Glad to hear!

  • I'm having the same issue and I looked in the Wordpress dashboard under Setting -> Media and I don't see any way to set paths. I am running Ubuntu 14.10 and have the latest Wordpress version.
