Chrome can reach my website but other browsers cannot.

I’ve been trying to setup a web server using Nginx and Ubuntu 16.04 and I think I’m almost there it’s just that whenever I visit my site on a computer other than the one I’ve been configuring it one (yes, it’s hosted with DO), I get a DNS Server cannot be found error.

One site is configured with the digital ocean name servers and one is with my vanity name servers to eliminate problems with those, and they both point to one server with NGINX working properly.

What gives? Tell me what more information you need.

My site is only available from my iMac but not any other device. Not browser related.

Can you share your domain name? Without looking at what is returned when requesting your DNS records this is not something that can be easily resolved.

The first thing I would check if I encountered what you described would be to check that my local computer (the one that can see the site) is:

  • Using standard public DNS resolvers like those from your ISP or google’s
  • Does not have an entry in the hosts file that overrides DNS for this domain. This is in /etc/hosts on Linux and Mac (C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc on Windows if anyone comes by this page looking for that information).
