Concern about Nameservers

Posted on January 30, 2015

Hello everyone,

I have a concern about how nameservers and DNS records work. The thing is, let’s imagine I have a domain registered and their nameservers are set to ns1, ns2 and ns3.digitalocean.com. Then, I want the content of a droplet to be shown on my registered domain, so I go to DNS > Add Domain, I write my domain name in the “Name” field, and I select my desired droplet. And voilà! Now my domain shows my droplet’s content.

My question is: do I really need to be the domain owner to make this? I mean, what if someone else sees that my domain’s nameservers are pointing to DO and completes the 2nd step in his/her DO account?

Is there any measure to avoid this?

Thanks in advance!

Regards, Jorge

While it would be possible, someone would have to create the record in our control panel between the time that you repoint the domain and add records yourself. In practice this can be completely avoided by creating your DNS records in our control panel prior to repointing your domain with your registrar.

While we have encountered some domain disputes the situation you have described has not occurred to the best of my knowledge and if it were to happen it would be a simple matter for our support team to sort out based on the domain whois.
