Cost of Backups and Snapshots?

Is there any additional cost for utilizing automatic backups or snapshots? If so, is it something like a few cents per GB of storage the backup or snapshot takes up?

I am so confused, because this says they do cost money!

This tutorial provides an explanation for how backup and snapshots work on DigitalOcean. Additionally, it includes information on how to scale, backup, and clone out servers with snapshots.
  • I know this is an older question, but I wanted to add a quick update for you and other users. Beginning October 1, 2016, we will begin charging for snapshot storage at $0.05 per gigabyte per month. It’s an hourly price, so just like our other features, you only pay for what you use. Likewise, it is calculated from a compressed version of the snapshot — not the total disk space allocated for your Droplet.

I'm only a customer and this isn't an official response, but there is no charge for storage of backups or snapshots. I've been here since March 2012 and I've never gotten a charge for storage of backups or snapshots. Hope this helps.
Hi Scott. Thanks for answering, you are correct–just to confirm: there is no charge for backups and snapshots =]
does it take space from the droplets?
No-- backups are saved in a separate place.

  • I’ve been a customer for only three months and I have automatic backups enabled since the beginning.
While I understand that they are supposed to cost 20% of the plan, I haven’t been charged for them so far. In the all the invoices so far, there’s an item that reads “ (1GB Backup Services) … $0.00”

Is there a particular reason for that? I’m happy but I’d like to know.

from the control panel:
Please note: We will begin charging for automated backups starting on July 1st, 2013. You will receive your first bill for enabled backups on August 1st, 2013. Pricing is set at 20% of the Droplet's monthly cost (e.g. It will cost $1/mo. to enable backups for a 512MB Droplet).
Could you please confirm that snapshots are still free? If yes, how long they are stored?
