Question

Do DO servers have soundcards? If not how can I play audio?

  • Posted September 24, 2014

The program ‘beep’ seems to run, but I don’t hear anything. Where is the sound going? If I want to do work with playing midi (PortMidi) is this possible too?

Interesting question.

Do you want to play a song for DO server maintenance staffs, when you accessing it remotely?

@marksantolucito I don’t think DO server will have any virtual sound device on it, /proc/asound is absent on my droplet.

Found this question, seems it is not answered, good luck https://www.digitalocean.com/community/questions/does-digital-ocean-support-pseudo-audio-device-such-as-alsa

@Tony haha forgot to mention I’m trying to port the audio though X window.

To enable sound, you need to load a “dummy” sound card. You can do this with:

sudo modprobe snd-dummy

After doing so, you’ll notice that /proc/asound becomes populated:

$ ls /proc/asound
card0 cards devices Dummy modules pcm seq timers version

You’ll also want to install alsa-base as it is not included on Ubuntu Server by default:

sudo apt-get install alsa-base
