Docker App missing /var/run/postgresql folder

PostgreSQL

I have a Docker app that I’m deploying to the App platform, that includes installing postgresql.

During the Docker build when installing postgresql it should create a folder /var/run/postgresql that is used to start the postgres server. However the folder is missing which causes the postgres start to error.

It seems to be specific to the App platform, if I build the same image in a Droplet, the installation works fine and I can start postgres.

Dockerfile:

FROM ubuntu:20.04

ADD dependencies /
RUN ["chmod", "+x", "dependencies"]
RUN /dependencies

dependencies installed:

#! /usr/bin/env bash
set -e

# dependencies
export DEBIAN_FRONTEND=noninteractive
apt-get update
apt-get install -y postgresql bash

apt-get clean

Hello,

I’ve not seen this specific error, but keep in mind that you should not run your databases on the App platform, as each time you deploy a new version of your application or if you scale your component all of the data will be gone.

You should treat the components deployed to the App platform as immutable.

For persisting your data you could use a Managed database:

Best,
