Domain Transer, DNS, and Pointers

 • Posted March 15, 2013

I followed the community guides on transferring DNS, nameservers, and all that. I used to have my domain ( hosted somewhere else but now I’ve changed everything needed. When I load I still see the page/text I saw before I changed the info. Is this normal or does it take time to propagate? I know over at my other host, there is a “Pointers” section where I can change to point the domain to (i.e. subdirectory, main directory, parked, etc) somewhere else. What do I need to do or any info? Thanks! :)

Awesome, thanks!

You’ll need to update the DNS record for your domain name with your registrar. This is usually done by updating the “A” record for <yourdomain>.com and www.<yourdomain>.com. You’ll want both those records to now have the IP address of your new droplet. Once you make this change, it can take up to 24 hours to propagate.

You can test it locally but attempting to ping your domain from the command line. So, from Win/Linux/OSX run the following:

ping

And look for the response which should show you your IP address. For example, I get the following:

PING ( 56 data bytes
64 bytes from icmp_seq=0 ttl=55 time=95.529 ms
64 bytes from icmp_seq=1 ttl=55 time=77.434 ms
64 bytes from icmp_seq=2 ttl=55 time=44.300 ms

Update: Currently on I have the pointer to the IP of the new server, however, in the address bar it shows the IP not the domain. Do I need to cancel my domain or what?
