Error 1001 DNS resolution error

CDNDigitalOcean App Platform

I am seeing this error when I add an alias name on namecheap. I have a domain that is working fine at www.example.io but not on example.io.

I followed this guide to add an alias for example.io.

https://www.namecheap.com/support/knowledgebase/article.aspx/10128/2237/how-to-create-an-alias-record/

I also added example.io to DO App domains and also to the allowed hosts.

After adding that and waiting for 30 minutes. I still see this error.

Error 1001 Ray ID: 60d4313e48086d22 • 2021-01-06 08:50:35 UTC
DNS resolution error
What happened?
You’ve requested a page on a website (example.io) that is on the Cloudflare network. Cloudflare is currently unable to resolve your requested domain (example.io). There are two potential causes of this:

Most likely: if the owner just signed up for Cloudflare it can take a few minutes for the website’s information to be distributed to our global network.

Less likely: something is wrong with this site’s configuration. Usually this happens when accounts have been signed up with a partner organization (e.g., a hosting provider) and the provider’s DNS fails.

Has anyone else has encountered this error before? I have CDN enabled on my app Spaces. I am assuming that this is a DO that uses Cloudflare that’s why I am seeing this issue?

I found a solution on Cloudflare but I just enabled CDN on DO Sapces and didn’t sign for the Cloudflare account. How can I solve this issue?

Hey @kashifShrimp ,

Are you adding a Custom Domain or just a CNAME to www.example.io?

If you are adding a Custom Domain, you need to first delegate your Domain to DigitalOcean so it can be managed by DigitalOcean, and then add the Domain to the App Platform. This document has more details: https://www.digitalocean.com/docs/app-platform/how-to/manage-domains/#option-2-using-a-cname-pointer

If you are just adding a CNAME for www.example.io to your DigitalOcean App, then example.io would be handled by your DNS management service. I assume this is not the case, because your getting a 1001 error for example.io.

I’d check a few things first:

  1. Domain is delegated to DigitalOcean.
  2. You have both domains added in App Platform (example.io and www.example.io).

Let me know if there are other issues. Or feel free to contact support and they can help you in greater detail by looking at your app and your DNS setup.

Hi there @kashifShrimp,

I’ve not personally used NameCheap for domain aliases. What I could suggest here is try switch to Cloudflare DNS directly, they allow pointing your root domain name to another domain name via their DNS zone and that way it would work.

Also, on the page that you’ve shared, I can see that NameCheap advised you to get in touch with their support team. Did you get any feedback from them?

Regards,
Bobby
