I would like to configure an external Vanish server. Does this make sense? If yes, could someone please tell me how to configure it properly. Internet < > VANISH < > Webserver I will be hosting multiple website on the Webserver and I want to make sure that, if one gets hit by traffic, VANISH will basically step in and serve mostly static sites.

Yes it does, and it should be very similar to setting up varnish on the same server (see https://www.digitalocean.com/community/articles/how-to-install-and-configure-varnish-with-apache-on-ubuntu-12-04--3 )
except that instead of configuring your backend to be localhost port 8080(this tutorial's equivalent of you would instead use the ip of your webserver and the default port 80(assuming that is where apache is there)

After that, the domain name and the ip you would give to clients would be that of the varnish server and NOT that of your webserver.

I hope this helps

Varnish is an HTTP accelerator and a useful tool for speeding up a server, especially during a times when there is high traffic to a site. It works by redirecting visitors to static pages whenever possible and only drawing on the virtual private server itself if there is a need for an active process. This tutorial covers setting up Varnish with Apache on Ubuntu 12.04.
