I installed a LAMP stack and created a virtual host - as I was not able to edit the default content in the html folder if I go to www.mysite.comthe content is showing my virtual folder content and if I go to mysite.com I see the default apahce page
where would I set the virtual host to be the main content for my domain

In the virtualhost configuration you would need to have the ServerName and ServerAlias fields include your domain and any subdomains you want served by that virtualhost. For example:
ServerName example.org
ServerAlias www.example.org
