How do forum points work?

When you go to the community, in the place of questions, it says: "Ask a question or answer to get points". What exactly are these "points" and how do WE benefit from them?

They're internet points, the one with the most points wins the internet.

@mlwalk3r, I think you already won the net :)

O.k, I can kind of anticipate that DO is working on some new development to encourage users helping each other through points and badges. This is only my guess and it looks like everything is under the Beta version as it says Community Beta.

this is only my understanding and it could be right or wrong...
