How do I Change the timezone on a CentOS Server?

Posted on September 23, 2019

Hi all!

I’m quite new to Linux in general so sorry for the basic question. I want to change the timezone of my CentOS server but so far I’ve not been able to do so. I had a look at a few tutorials but so far without any luck.

Does anyone have an easy to follow guide on how to do that?

Thanks!

Hello,

Here’s how to do that with just a few easy steps:

  1. Choose the zone that you would like to use at:
ls -l /usr/share/zoneinfo/
  1. Then backup your current timezone file:
mv /etc/localtime /etc/localtime.bak
  1. Now create a link for the new timezone:
ln -s /usr/share/zoneinfo/Greenwich /etc/localtime

Note: Please replace the Greenwich part with the zone file that you would like to use.

To verify that the change was successful just run:

date

This is it :)

Hope that this helps! Regards, Bobby
