You need to connect via SSH using IP address of your Droplet, username root and password you got in mail from DigitalOcean.

In case you used SSH public key, you will not get password in mail. Instead of it use key you specified on Droplet creation.

How to connect via SSH to Droplet tutorial should explain you how to do it on your OS.

SSH will give you console access t Droplet (VPS), if you want remote desktop, you need to install VNC.
How to Install and Configure VNC on Ubuntu 16.04 will explain you how to do it.

In this guide, we will be setting up VNC on a Ubuntu 16.04 server and connecting to it securely through an SSH tunnel. The VNC server we will be using is TightVNC, a fast and lightweight remote control package. This choice will ensure that our VNC connection will be smooth and stable even on slower internet connections.
