I am on the $20/mth plan but looking at moving to the $40/mth plan due to some expected increases in traffic…How do I go about upgrading and what are the implications (ie. downtime, process etc)

When it comes to upgrading you plan, there are two options.
To use this option, power down your droplet and navigate to Resize in the DigitalOcean control panel. Then simply select the new size you want to use. There is only about one minute of downtime. The one drawback to this approach is that while RAM and CPU cores for your droplet are increased, no changes are made to disk size changes.
If you need the extra disk space as well, you’ll need to use this option. Check out this tutorial. The drawback to this option is that it can take more time to accomplish.
