Question

How do I use socks5 proxy without having PuTTY open?

I set up a socks5 proxy using this tutorial:
https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-route-web-traffic-securely-without-a-vpn-using-a-socks-tunnel

I connect to the proxy by entering “localhost” and the port in Firefox and it connects, but it closes everytime I close PuTTY. I want to use this proxy somewhere else using the IP and Proxy, how do I make it stay active when I close PuTTY?

Hello, @usernameunlocked

In order to use the proxy you need to have the ssh tunnel open. Once you close it the connection to your droplet will be closed and this will also mean that the socks5 proxy will be closed too.

Hope this helps!

  • Is there no way to keep the ssh tunnel open? I want to access the proxy from another device, on a network where some websites are blocked. I would have no use of this if I can only use it at home. Is this not the right way to access blocked websites?

    • Hello, @usernameunlocked

In order to keep the ssh tunnel open you need to keep the ssh command running, e.g your PuTTY client open/running. If the other device does not have a ssh client installed (PuTTY or any other command line terminal), then you will need to either install such client or connect to your home/other network using RDP client.

      Hope this helps!

      Regards,
      Alex
