  • So you want to run wordpress on ubuntu?

    1. Create an ubuntu droplet.

    2. Check out this guide, and make sure you install all the packages mentioned in the introduction portion before starting the configuration process.

WordPress is the most popular content management system on the web. In this guide, we'll demonstrate how to install and configure it on an Ubuntu 14.04 server.
  • Hi, you can run LEMP with the 5$ droplet no issues.
    I’m running:
    Ubuntu 14.04.02 LTS
    MySQL (latest stable)
    Redis (latest stable)
    Nginx 1.9.10
Letsencrypt with auto-renewal and A+ rating

I have also installed the redis WP cache plugin and I also use redis (PHPREDIS) from a custom PHP script I am coding on. (Will use it as an API gateway, as a service bus). In this way I can store the API calls with a defined TTL in Redis. I have no issues with memory and I think it’s very quick.

If you do run redis, I recommend you to use sockets instead of tcp.
Here you can see the benchmarks I did on redis TCP vs sockets on the 5$ droplet:

I also set up NGINX with HTTP/2. I would try 1.9.11 Nginx if I were you, since it can have pluggable extensions (thinking about ngx_pagespeed).

DigitalOcean is not going to have a oneclick application quite like that, so you will have to do a bit of the installations yourself. That said, I would recommend doing the following:

  1. Create an Ubuntu 15 droplet (1GB of RAM or more)
  2. Install LEMP
  3. Install Varnish
  4. Install Node.js
  5. Install phpMyAdmin
  6. Install WordPress

Some of the above guides will be for older Ubuntu releases, but the process is the same between them normally.

Hope it helps,

Wordpress is a free and open source website and blogging tool that uses php and MySQL. It was created in 2003 and has since then expanded to manage 22% of all the new websites created and has over 20,000 plugins to customize its functionality. This tutorial shows how to install Wordpress on a server with LEMP (with nginx instead of apache). It is written for Ubuntu 12.04.
