How long does it take for a deleted domain in digital ocean to take effect?

Posted on May 14, 2020

I am working on a project for a client. The previous person managing the project added the domain name to his own personal digital ocean account.

Now my client created an account and gave me access. The previous person managing the account has deleted the domain from his digitalocean account, but I can’t still add it to my client account. How long will it take before I can add it?

Hi @healthaegle -

Deleting a domain record should make it pretty much instantly available to create on another account.

One gotcha that I have run into before: If the old account-holder happened to create multiple records like www.domain.com and test.domain.com, they need to delete ALL the instances of domain.com before it will be available to set on your new account.

Have them double check that there are zero instances of the TLD you want, if that doesn’t solve it, let me know here and open a support ticket and I’ll get it escalated.

Hello there.

I think the domain deletion issue is still persist. I have contacted support but they couldn’t help. All they relied was “check your other account and it may be registered there”. I have tried to add my domain and it worked in my the other account. After that, I removed the domain and tried to add to my desired account and there was the same annoying issue “Domain ‘…’ name already exists”.

What I was thinking, the deleted domain names aren’t being released from the digitalOcean account and causing the issue. If anyone from support can actually help it would be helpful. Please, increase the ticker expiration duration(“Tickets are closed in 24 hours if no response from the ticket issuer.”)
