Okay, so to install PHPMyAdmin you need to add a VHOST to apache, but you should first consider if you really need a MySQL manager, due to the associated security risk (it gives users access to your db).

  • Yes. You should be able to install phpmyadmin by running the following:

    apt-get update
    apt-get install phpmyadmin

Make sure you have the MySQL root password handy before doing this. When prompted select apache as the web server and provide your MySQL root password when asked. This will set up phpmyadmin under /phpmyadmin.

I agree with @ioanmoldovan199 in recommending against this as it is a security concern. Personally I use the free MySQL Workbench application which has the option to connect to the MySQL service on your droplet over your existing SSH service which is much more secure.

Thank you

While many users require access to a database management system like MySQL, not all users feel comfortable interacting with the MySQL prompt on a daily basis. In this guide, we'll discuss how to install and secure phpMyAdmin, a web management interface for MySQL, on an Ubuntu 16.04 server.
