Even after updating the default server root, the application is not loading by default.

server {
listen 80 default_server;

root /var/lib/tomcat7/webapps/webappfolder/;
index index.html index.htm

servername ipaddress;

location / {
proxypass http://localhost:8080;
setheader X-Forwarded-Host $host;
setheader X-Forwarded-Server $host;
setheader X-Forwarded-For $proxyaddxforwarded_for;

i can access using my web applicaiton using the url - http://ip_address/web_app_folder but not with the url - http://ip_address/

Appreciate any help.

After editing nginx, did you restart/reload nginx? If you didn’t, it won’t work:

(sudo) service nginx restart

If that doesn’t work, are you sure you got the proper directory? Check it once more where your default page file is.
