How to configure loadbalancer and nginx for managed kubernetes on DO

OK…So long story but i have a service that has CSRF protection. So by the time the request goes from load balancer -> nginx -> pod the X-Forwarded-Proto is set to http vs https
I have since configured the system to be a TLS passthrough but i am getting a SSL_ERROR_RX_RECORD_TOO_LONG error now. I am using the 1 click install nginx-ingress and cert-manager i have configured them according to docs. nginx is finding the cert now, but still the cert size is too long.
not sure what else to post so i will wait for requests. i have access to everything am just stuck.
Just realized that the listener port for 443 was going to 80 changed that to 443 and same error.
