  • Posted July 21, 2014

Hi there

I have just installed mysql (Mariadb) to my digital ocean box using fedora 20. I would like now to try and configure this so as to be able to connect to it from Mysql workbench on my mac. Please can someone provide some easy to follow instructions on how to configure as so far i keep getting the following error

failed to connect to MySQL at (ip) with user root. Can’t connect to MySQL server on (ip) (61)

If you’re on the Fedora 20 droplet … you’ll probably find like me that the IPTables on fedora are blocking connections when you try to access externaly. Temporarily I dropped the firewall using “iptables -F”, which opened up everything. This will revert back to the default settings when you reboot the droplet, so longer term you should also look at configuring some appropriate rules for your IP Tables.

When you set up your installation, you probably configured it to accept connections only from localhost. Rejecting outside connections is a common security precaution.

Set up your MySQL Workbench connection using the “Standard TCP/IP over SSH” connection method. That should do it for you.
