How to know if my VPN server is safe

Posted on March 25, 2016

Hi,

I recently set up an openvpn server on my vps successfully and its working perfectly so far, however when I performed a dns leak test while connected it showed my identity / country (dnsleaktest.com and whoer.net). I was hoping someone could asnwer and tell me how to configure my server so it is not leaking DNS. I’ve followed this tutorial https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-set-up-an-openvpn-server-on-ubuntu-14-04 to setup my vpn server.

This service checks if your PC is making DNS requests directly rather than through the VPN. The site also includes a guide on how to adjust your PC’s configuration to avoid this leaking. You should not need to take any additional steps on your server based on this information.
