I’m fairly new with server hosting and management, so I’m getting a bit confused with this step:
“”“”“”
fully registered domain name. This tutorial will use example.com
throughout. You can purchase a domain name on Namecheap, get one for free on Freenom, or use the domain registrar of your choice.
Both of the following DNS records set up for your server. You can follow this introduction to DigitalOcean DNS for details on how to add them.
example.com
pointing to your server’s public IP address.www.example.com
pointing to your server’s public IP address.
“”“”“”“”As in previous steps (setting up the Ubuntu server, LAMP), you have to create a domain (your_domain),why the need of example.com
?

Heya,
As mentioned, you should replace both instances of example.com with your actual domain. This ensures that when someone types your domain into their browser, it will point to your server.
You may find the How To Set Up a Host Name with DigitalOcean tutorial very useful for additional context.

Heya,
When you see “example.com” or “your_domain” in tutorials, you’re expected to replace it with the domain name you own or intend to use for the purpose described.
Hey!
Yep, you can use any domain name that you own, it does not need to be a newly registered domain via on of the above providers, but you can use any domain name if you already have one.
If this will help, here is a step by step guide on how to get a domain name from Freenom:
The
example.com
is just used as an example in the tutorial. The
your_domain
is not a valid domain and will not work for the guide that you are referencing here.Let me know if you have any questions.
Best,
Bobby
