How to set up e-mail accounts?

Posted August 2, 2013 9.5k views
After moving from a shared host, I was used to being able to create email accounts easily. However when I started hosting with Digital Ocean, I have no idea or if it is even possible to set up an e-mail account, and access it through a web interface at for example. Please can you shed some light on how I can go about this?

For the monthly fee, you get a high-quality VPS; a DNS manager; responsive support; and the backing of an active D.O. community; and ... that's pretty much it. If you want e-mail, you have to arrange for that yourself. How many e-mail accounts do you think you'll need? Are there any specific features you're looking for, e.g. web access, IMAP, groupware integration, etc.?

If you would like to create your own online e-mail system, you can use iRedMail. In this article we will explain how you can do it on your Ubuntu 12.04 virtual server.
I personally use an external mail service (Google apps):

It used to be free but it's not anymore. It's still relatively cheap if you don't have a lot of accounts.

Setting up your own mail server isn't a "do it and forget about it" thing, I don't recommend hosting your own mail server unless you know what you're doing.
I, too, am a big fan of Google Apps. A comparable option is Microsoft's Office 365.

For exactly this purpose we’ve developed Should be very easy to setup with automatic DigitalOcean DNS setup. Would be cool if you could check it out.
