I would love to be wrong about this, but I was researching this last year and my conclusion is that running your own mail server is not a good idea. There are a lot of security details for getting other mail servers to trust your server, and there a lot of things to manage to avoid spam and other malicious behavior.

I use NameCheap for my domains and they provide email forwarding for free. I am sure there lots of other options that are very reliable and affordable.

I have even toyed with building email forwarding with Amazon AWS (SES+SQS+Lambda) and that felt easier and more reliable than running a mail server.
