How to update archive mirror host?

December 23, 2014 2.4k views

The apt-get update command is very slow and is producing errors that look like this:

Err utopic/main i386 Packages
  404 Not Found [IP: 80]

... followed later by warning messages like:

W: Failed to fetch 404 Not Found [IP: 80]

... and finally this:

E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

I presume that Digital Ocean's archive mirror [IP: 80] is not in service. Should I be editing the /etc/apt/sources.list file, and if so to what, or is there a better way to restore normal apt-get functionality?

It looks like there was a temporary issue with connectivity for the mirror. It should be fine now.

If you'd still like to replace the DigitalOcean provided mirror with the main Ubuntu mirror, this one liner will update your sources.list:

sed -i 's/' /etc/apt/sources.list
  • Thanks! I've found that [IP: 80] host unavailable for the past couple of weeks and still unavailable now. Your advice to switch to the main Ubuntu mirror worked perfectly.

Hi, I"m getting the same error today...

Err utopic-updates/universe amd64 Packages
  404 Not Found [IP: 80]
W: Failed to fetch 404 Not Found [IP: 80]

^ I also have this problem.
