Question

How to upgrade K8 1.14 to 1.16? ..The dashboard shows "cluster is up to date", should I create a new one?

DigitalOcean Managed Kubernetes

I’m using DO Kubernetes 1.14 version, I would like to upgrade to 1.16.

I’ve clicked into “Upgrade Now button” to update to “1.14.10-do.2” , from 1.14.XX .
Now the K8 index shows a green ball, but inside k8-cluster shows a blue spinner.

But dashboard says:
“AVAILABLE UPGRADES
This cluster is up to date: 1.14.10-do.2”

As doc says :
“UPGRADING TO A NEW MINOR VERSION
The on-demand process is required when upgrading your cluster to a new minor version of Kubernetes. ”
https://www.digitalocean.com/docs/kubernetes/how-to/upgrade-cluster/#new-minor-version

Should I create a new k8 cluster to use 1.16 or I have to wait a little?

Many thanks!

After some time shows the “upgrade button” to 1.15 ,then it will show another one for 1.16 , I guess

  • Hi @fjvico,

Usually the update process for Kubernetes is upgrading from one minor version to another. So basically, you can’t actually update from 1.14 to 1.16 directly, you’ll need to go through 1.15 first.

Additionally, if you are interested how the magic happens, I’ll recommend checking out the following documentation on Kubernetes :

    https://kubernetes.io/docs/tasks/administer-cluster/kubeadm/kubeadm-upgrade/

I know you are not actually performing the stuff like it’s mentioned in the article but it’s good to know how generally stuff work.
