I made a mistake and did not name my droplet s the same as my domain name. I then brought up my web server and set up DNS to my domain name. All’s well with webserver.
I now want to install a mail server and it says to name my droplet the same as my domain name, which will become its hostname and reverse DNS record. https://www.digitalocean.com/community/articles/how-to-install-iredmail-on-ubuntu-12-04-x64
Can I fix this some how without starting a new droplet and reassigning the new IP to my domain name.

Definitely. Edit
/etc/hostname
and replace the contents with your new hostname. Also edit
/etc/hosts
and add the following line:

127.0.0.1 newhostname.com newhostname

Finally, run
sudo hostname -F /etc/hostname
