I am new on digital ocean server and I want to upgrade kernel because of “dirty COW”. when i checked in Droplets page’s Kernel it’s show this message “The kernel for this Droplet is managed internally and cannot be changed from the control panel.”

Can you tell me how can i upgrade it?

My Ubuntu version is 14.04.

You need to do it from Droplet. SSH to your Droplet and execute following:

  • sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Update command is used to update cache, dist-upgrade will update your kernel to latest available in repository.

by Hazel Virdó
On October 21, 2016, a privilege escalation vulnerability in the Linux kernel was disclosed. The bug is nicknamed Dirty COW because the underlying issue was a race condition in the way kernel handles copy-on-write (COW). Exploiting this bug means that a regular, unprivileged user on your server can gain write access to any file they can read, and can therefore increase their privileges on the system. This tutorial explains how to protect your server from this vulnerability.
